The Porcelain Oval Au Gratin Dish is perfect for making meals with a crust of breadcrumbs or cheese baked on top. The shallow au gratin dish allows ingredients to cook evenly and thoroughly underneath the top crust layer. The term au gratin is derived from the French word gratee, which literally means to scrape. It refers to the crispy, crunchy baked on layer around the rim of the dish. In addition to gratin, the dish can also be used a shirred-egg dish.
