General Suggestions for Best Results

  • For best results, use buttercream or fondant icing.
  • Use a razor type knife to trim the white edges from the long ends of each designer strip before applying the Designer Prints™ to the cake.
  • Return all images to the zipper bag as soon as they are no longer needed.
  • Apply your Designer Prints™ before your buttercream icing has formed a crust.
  • If your buttercream has formed a crust, use a slight mist of plain water to moisten the icing so the Designer Prints™ will adhere to the cake.
  • Trim the last strip while it is still attached to the backing strip to avoid waste.
  • Use a razor type knife to trim the last strip from the bottom-up after applying it to the cake.
  • When building tiered cakes, assemble cakes completely before beginning to apply the decorations.
  • To apply Designer Prints™ to fondant, moisten fondant with a brush and plain water only where the Designer Prints™ will be applied.

Designer Prints™ Bow Technique

Designer Prints™ from Lucks allow you to easily add design to gum paste or fondant bows. It’s a good idea to practice your bow making technique with plain gum paste or fondant until you have that part perfected. You can always reroll your mistakes if you haven’t added colors or Designer Prints™ yet.

1.       Prepare your Designer Prints™ ahead of time by trimming away the white edges all the way around the print while it is still on the backing sheet.

·         For best results use a pointed blade or an Exacto type razor knife.

·         Return your Designer Prints™ to their ziplock bag and reseal until you are ready to use.

2.       Prepare the gum paste (gum paste works best, but you can also use fondant or a fondant/gum paste mix).

3.       Roll out gum paste as thin as you can work with.

4.       Apply the Designer Prints™

·         If it is tacky, you can apply Designer Print™ without any additional moisture.

·         If it is not tacky, use a brush and apply a VERY THIN swipe of plain water to the gum paste where you will be placing the Designer Print™.

·         Lay the Designer Print™ on the gum paste, face up.

·         Press to make sure it has adhered.

5.       Trim way excess gum paste.

6.       Trim the Designer Print™ in half the long way to equal two strips 10” long x 1- 1/8” wide.

7.       Flip on over on a clean dry surface and slightly moisten the two ends, fold them toward the middle to make 2 loops.

8.       Cut the remaining strip of gum paste with the Designer Print™ into 3 pieces 3-1/3”x1-1/8”.

9.       Wrap on piece around the center of your bow and moisten ends to seal.

·         Stand your bow on edge to maintain loops until they dry.

10.    Use the remaining 2 pieces as your tail to your bow.

11.    These cakes shown are 5” round and 4” squares. Ice them and apply Happy Variety Designer Prints™ Edible Image® Designer Print™ pattern you chose.

12.    Wrap around the cakes or lay across the tops like ribbon.

13.    Finish with your fancy bows.

Trimming Designer Prints™ with a Pastry Cutter

Here is an easy trick for trimming away the white edge of your Edible Image ® Designer Prints™.

Use a pastry wheel cutter with the sharp edge. Cutters are available with one straight edge wheel and one zigzag edge wheel. These are wonderful for cutting the straight edge or adding an optional zigzag pattern to the edges of your Designer Prints™.  This way, you can make sure your Designer Print™ is cut evenly  (and straightly) on both sides.

Alternatively, you can use a ribbon insertion tool with the pointed blade an X-Acto type razor knife to trim the ends. You will still need the razor knife for the last cut on the Designer Print™.  After you have wrapped the cake and met the strip to the end of the last strip, cut the excess part of the strip while it is on the cake. It's best to make that last cut in an upward motion, so you have a clean even cut that does not pull the Designer Print™ away from the cake. Or, if you have a steady hand, you can just use scissors.

Tips for Working with Edible Image® Designs

Under extreme conditions, such as high humidity, an Edible Image® decoration may be difficult to peel from the backing sheet. If you are having issues peeling your Edible Image® decoration, try these tips.

Edible Image® Decorations
•    Gently roll the backing sheet over the edge of a table or counter (with image facing up) to loosen the image.
•    If that does not work, place the decoration in the freezer for 30 to 90 seconds, then gently roll the backing sheet over the edge of a table or counter (with image facing up).  The image should pop off the backing sheet.

Designer Prints™
•    Place one sheet in the freezer for 30 to 90 seconds.
•    Gently roll the backing sheet over the edge of a table or counter starting at the edge of the first strip (with image facing up).
•    Peel the first strip off the backing sheet.
•    Put the sheet with the remaining strip(s) back in the freezer, and repeat the process until you have removed all the Designer Prints™ you need.

Print-Ons® Sheets
•    Place the printed sheet in the freezer for 30 to 90 seconds.
•    Remove it from freezer and allow it to rest for 5 seconds.
•    Gently roll the backing sheet over the edge of a table or counter (with image facing up).  The image should pop off the backing sheet or peel with greater ease.

Additional Troubleshooting Tips
•    Save a backing sheet, and use it to slide under Edible Image® design to loosen from other backing sheets.
•    If buttercream has formed a crust, spray with a fine mist of water before applying the image.
•    DO NOT ADD extra moisture to non-dairy whipped toppings.
•    Add a generous mist of water over royal icing.
•    For fondant only, add a slight misting of water where you will be placing an Edible Image® design.
•    If you are frequently having issues removing Edible Image® designs from their backing sheets, call Lucks to order desiccant packs.
